Talking Men and Men’s Mental Health!

As part of Mental Health Awareness Week, I am doing a series of blogs highlighting the importance of listening to lived experience and peer-support. I have advocated the need for people led projects for over 40 years, firstly as a mental health professional but since 2016, politically. I am presenting and talking on my work on mental health at a seminar in the South-East region hosted by the Centre for Mental Health on the 13th May especially about peer-support groups and their benefits to those experiencing isolation, depression and anxiety. I have always promoted Walk and Talk and this year’s, Mental Health Awareness week is promoting the benefits of physical activity for good mental well-being.

Talking Men and My Time

It is over 12 years since I published my study and work on men, suicide and mental health. I was the founder of the psychological social enterprise My Time, which is now part of the Richmond Fellowship. This included making a film, Talking Men. My Time is an award-winning, pioneering and innovative, multi-lingual, community mental health service provider working in the Midlands.

Men and Suicide

Men are 4 times more likely to commit suicide than women and 4 times less likely to seek help. I have campaigned on the issue of men’s mental health for over 20 years and continued this mission when returning to Isle of Wight in 2013. I led on a Suicide Taskforce and Report for the IW Council’s Policy and Scrutiny Committee for Health and Social Care (2019) and highlighted the need for interventions and peer-led support projects for men and in particular veterans. I campaigned for Isle of Wight Public Health to establish a grant fund in my role as IW Mental Health Champion to support peer-led projects. My Talking Men study highlighted back in 2012, men respond better by talking to other men who have gone through similar experiences and that is still the case now if you visit local projects founded by local pioneers.

Local IW Projects Supporting Men and Veterans

Dale Hillier, a veteran of the Falklands War and Ryde resident, founded the Veteran’s Hub and Hotel.

Karl Hart founded the Men Only project based at 134, High Street, Ryde. Karl started Men’s Walk and Talk groups nearly 2 years ago and I am proud to say I was on the first one.

Although the Talking Men’s film is 14 years old, it still has relevance today and highlights the need for projects such as Men Only and Veteran’s Hub. You might also see a younger version of me!
