Ryde Appley Ward Xmas 2023 Update!

Michael Lilley as Band Leader Ryde Merry and Bright Event 2023

I wish you and all your family a very Merry Xmas, Happy Seasonal Break and a Wonderful New Year. It has been a busy time.

Merry and Bright – Celebrating Ryde!

I led the Merry and Bright carnival parade on the 8th December and Ryde was alive with goodwill, kindness and innovation. I was the Conductor of the Ryde Express! It was great seeing so many people. 2024 is an exciting year for Ryde as some of the many projects that have been planned will be finished and open. This will include the new Ryde Youth and Community Centre at St. Thomas’s Church, Appley Tower and Art Gallery/Viewing Tower, The Department Art Centre on Cross Street and finalisation of the Ryde High Street. Ryde will start to see the first £2M out of a £20M fund approved by the Government come into the Town for regeneration. December saw two exciting new restaurants/cafes open, the Crossing on Union Street and a Tapas Bar (owned by Pickle and Dill) open on the Esplanade.

Ryde has been hit by the cost-of-living crisis and floods amongst other things but it has terrific community spirit and it is fighting back! As the first Chair of the new Ryde Community Development Trust, I am supporting local projects and families hit by the floods rebuild lives through raising funds for them, working with Ryde Town Council on exciting new projects including accessibility to beaches, a community garden with support from Ryde School, a new skate park on Esplanade, and the development of Waterside Community Trust. I am supporting the long-term project of bring the Town Hall back into use and community ownership.

Appley Tower – The work has started!

I am so proud that after campaigning for so many years that the Appley Tower Heritage and Renovation Project has started and will be completed in 2024 – Natural Enterprise | Appley Tower Heritage Project I went to see the Appley Tower players perform their new play – “Wish you were here” at Oakfield Primary School last week and it was brillant and told excellently the history of the Tower.

Raising Funds for Tidal Family Support!

It was good to see some of you on the 7th December and thank you to those who took part on the raffle as we raised £55.67 for Tidal Family Support charity based in Rink Road. On the 13th, Cllr Sarah Redrup (Grace’s Bakery) and I hosted a further raffle/quiz for Tidal at the Star Inn and raised a further £300 plus. Welcome to Tidal Family Support

Campaigning for Flood Prevention and Stopping Sewage Releases on Ryde Beaches!

The flooding of West Hill Road and Rink Road in the Ward in October along with flooding in Monkton Mead and Strand areas was devastating and I have been raising questions and lobbying hard at IW Council for answers and a change in planning strategy to make sure large developments are not built any closer that 0.5/1 mile need the coast line. I have been working closely with Sarah and Chani of Surfers Against Sewage in campaigning against sewage releases from Appley Pumping Station by Southern Water. I have put forward a motion to Stop Sewage Being Released into the sea from and around the Isle of Wight to be presented at the 17th January 2024 Full Council meeting.

Next Ward Meeting and Newsletters

My next ward meeting is not until Thursday 1st February 2024 at 7pm at St. John’s Church. I am planning a newsletter in February 2024 and will put out an update e-newsletter in January. Please look at my website www.michaellilley.uk as I do post regularly.

Save Westridge Farm Campaign!

The Save Westridge Farm Campaign continues and do click onto the recent updates on Save Westridge Farm Campaign (crowdjustice.com) and your support is really needed in promoting the campaign. Greenfields (IOW) – the residents’ vehicle to submit a case for Judicial Review are now waiting for the High Court to make a decision on permission to go to trial and this is likely in the next few weeks. Funds are still needed to pursue the case once/if permission is granted. This is fully explained on the site.

Continuing Torrential Rain with 100% increase in rain levels compared with previous years!

I have launched at petition as a way of enabling residents to raise their concerns to IW Council about recent extreme weather on the Isle of Wight. If you agree with the below please sign the petition. This helps me in getting your voices heard. We need action in 2024 before more homes are lost and lives changed for ever.

Please click on below petition and sign! Please help by sharing and promoting the petition throughout your networks such as Facebook!
