Happy 101st Birthday, Captain Tom with 100 Sandcastles!

Michael Lilley Mayor of Ryde, 100 sandcastles and Captain Tom 101st Birthday

Yesterday, I supported Monkton Arts Café and local residents, families and children to make 100 sandcastles to celebrate today’s Captain Tom’s 101st birthday to raise funds for NHS and Captain Tom’s Foundation.

I, in particular, am supporting Captain Tom’s Mental Health Resource as part of my campaign to raise awareness and importance of mental health well-being of local residents/community post Covid19.

We also in Ryde have Richard of Sutton Close who is doing 100 steps every day to raise funds for Mountbatten Hospice. He has been doing for many weeks and please give him support.

My Dad, who died in Ryde in 2015, aged 96, would be 102 this year if he lived. My Mum would have been 103 (She died in 1996). So Captain Tom represents a generation that means a lot to me and Captain Tom raised the spirits of our community last year at a very important time during the first lockdown. It is really fitting that a Spitfire has been flying over Ryde the last few days.
