Beach Accessibility in Ryde Becoming a Reality!

For many years I have been campaigning to get Ryde and Isle of Wight beaches accessible to all and this is now becoming a reality. I was first approached and aware of the issue in 2016 when I met Jon (below) who is a veteran and wheelchair user. He talked to me about how he could not play cricket on Appley Beach with his sons. He was by the beach watching but not on the beach playing with them.

As a Ryde Town Councillor I started pressing for a project to get beach accessibility on the agenda and teamed up with Isle Access. Over time this project was developed by Ryde Town Council and last week it was officially launched in partnership with Hovertravel and Grace’s Bakery (Cllr Sarah Redrup). Jon, now a Beach Accessibility Champion, along with Michele Wheatley (family beach champions), and work by Seaview Men in Sheds, we landed on Ryde Beach by Hovercraft and tested out the first stage of making the dream of accessibility for all a reality.

Funds have been raised for the first stage this Summer but further funds are needed so do click onto crowdfunding site. Below further information and photos.
